The power steering warning light rarely gets attention until the steering wheel suddenly feels heavy — but by then, you're already dealing with a genuine safety issue. Here's what usually triggers it.
Low Power Steering Fluid
On hydraulic power steering systems, low fluid is the most common cause. This can be as simple as a top-up, or point to a leak in the pump, hoses or rack that needs sealing.
A Failing Power Steering Pump
The pump pressurises the fluid that makes turning the wheel effortless. As it wears out, you may notice whining noises when turning, followed by the warning light and, eventually, noticeably heavier steering.
Electric Power Steering (EPS) Faults
Many modern cars use electric power steering instead of hydraulic systems. A fault here is usually a sensor issue or a problem within the EPS control module, and it will almost always need a diagnostic scan to pinpoint.
Low Battery Voltage
On EPS-equipped vehicles, a weak battery or charging system can sometimes trigger the light even when the steering system itself is fine — worth ruling out before assuming the worst.
Why You Shouldn't Ignore It
Heavy, unresponsive steering is dangerous, especially at low speed while parking or manoeuvring in traffic. If this light comes on, get your car inspected promptly — our technicians can scan the system, check fluid levels and pressure, and identify the exact cause before it turns into a bigger repair or a safety incident.
