Is Your Car Making You Sick? 5 Ways to G…

Car interiors hide more health hazards than most drivers realise — here's what to check and how to fix it.

Is Your Car Making You Sick? 5 Ways to Give Your Car a Checkup

Most of us think about our car in terms of engine health, tyre wear or fuel economy — not personal health. But the air you breathe inside your cabin, the surfaces you touch, and the systems you rely on every day can quietly work against you if they're neglected. Here are five checks worth adding to your routine.

1. Change Your Cabin Air Filter

Your cabin air filter traps dust, pollen and exhaust particles before they reach you. A clogged filter doesn't just smell stale — it recirculates the very particles it's supposed to block, which is a real concern for anyone with allergies or asthma. Most manufacturers recommend replacing it every 12,000–15,000 km, though Karachi's dustier roads may call for more frequent swaps.

2. Deep-Clean the Interior, Not Just Vacuum It

Fabric seats, floor mats and door panels trap bacteria, mould spores and allergens over time, especially if the car has ever gotten wet inside. A proper interior detail — shampooing upholstery and treating the AC vents — does far more than a quick vacuum ever will.

3. Check for Exhaust Leaks

A cracked exhaust manifold or leaking gasket can let carbon monoxide seep into the cabin, particularly with the AC recirculating air. Headaches, dizziness or nausea on long drives are warning signs worth taking seriously — get the exhaust system inspected immediately if you notice them.

4. Service Your Air Conditioning System

A neglected AC system can grow mould and bacteria inside the evaporator, which then gets blown straight at your face every time you switch it on. A musty smell on start-up is the classic symptom. Regular AC servicing, including evaporator cleaning, keeps the air you breathe genuinely clean.

5. Watch for Fluid Leaks

Coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid are all toxic if inhaled or absorbed over time, and a slow leak inside a warm engine bay can vaporise into the cabin through the ventilation system. Any sweet chemical smell while driving deserves an inspection, not a shrug.

None of these checks take long, and all of them are part of our standard inspection packages at CAREGAR. If it's been a while since your car had a proper once-over, book a free inspection and we'll walk you through exactly what your vehicle needs.
